Making a case for improved hyper-visibility as an antidote to attempted cultural erasures, painters Cindy Craig and Hedy Torres each has a community to champion—American women and hard-working immigrants to America—and though their visual styles are different, another thing they do share is a deep love for the power of color and pattern. Torres proceeds with a vibrant empathy for the warmth of flavorful ways of life that thrive even among economic and societal challenges. Craig has a darker sense of humor, with narrative scenarios steeped in irony that nevertheless offer a pageant of color, pattern, texture, and poise amid an atmosphere of stifling discomfort.
