LAUNCH Gallery is proud to present solo exhibitions by Cindy Craig and Hedy Torres whose work challenges common prejudices, labels and stereotypes. At a time when prevailing headwinds attempt to diminish the hard work, vital importance and human rights of women and immigrants, Cindy and Hedy elevate these vital populations through their poignant, beautiful and often humorous paintings and mixed media creations. This exhibition is a raucous celebration of identity through new works demonstrating originality, complexity and thoughtful reflection.

Cindy Craig’s new paintings depict women who have been silenced or marginalized. In her new series, Women as Home Decor, women wear lampshades to conceal their identities, transforming them into objects rather than human beings. These women are presented as decorations—household objects of beauty, sexual gratification, and fertility.
This series is a pointed, playful yet deeply felt commentary on domestic disharmony and the complexities of a modern woman’s identity. Holding an apple or a pair of sunglasses, powerful symbols of both fertility and sexual temptation, these women present a striking, satirical lens on contemporary feminism and the shifting roles of women today, all set against the colorfully-stylized backdrop of carefully-ordered, domestic tranquility. About the artist:
A native of the San Francisco Bay area and a graduate of UCLA, Cindy Craig challenges societal norms with a vibrant yet biting sense of mischief and irony. Through her multidisciplinary approach, employing watercolor, acrylic, collage, and photography, Craig delivers a searing feminist message beneath the pretty, sometimes light-hearted exterior. Craig has exhibited nationally at prestigious museums and galleries in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. Notable exhibitions include "I WANT Candy: The Sweet Stuff in American Art" at the Hudson River Museum, "Greetings From the American Dream" at the Riverside Art Museum, "Liquid Los Angeles: Currents of Contemporary Watercolor" at the Pasadena Museum of Art, and the "National Biennial Watercolor Invitational" at the Parkland Art Gallery in Chicago.
