Andrew K. Currey’s work explores our understanding of vulnerability, its display, concealment, and acceptance on a cultural level. This new series of work depicts small battle scenes and conflicts that illustrate an elaborate, theatrical dramatization of daily struggles and internal anxieties.

The works themselves are made large enough for the viewer to wrap their arms around. This choice of embraceable scale is to drive home the message that internal conflict should not be feared, but rather revered.

Ornate golden halos and stars serve as a resting place of reverence for the eyes, and disrupt the monochromatic cacophony in these altar-like shrines, giving viewers a small place to nod or bow to our own internal struggles. The grace, or lack of grace, in which we learn to grab the iron handles and carry our tiny battles is highlighted by floral imagery. Scattered over the fray, it pierces through it, reaching out into the dark as a symbol of growth.
